Cosmetic confusion

Certifications of natural and organic cosmetics and personal care is proliferating worldwide, and could cause further consumer confusions, according to Organic Monitor.

In North America, retailer Whole Foods announced their own premium body care standards. Certification companies Certech of Canada and NSF International based in Michigan also have their own standards, with Certech's already available and NSF's still under review; while several natural cosmetic manufacturers, retailers and ingredient suppliers formed an association called OASIS, which is expected to provide the only consensus organic standard for the US beauty and personal care market, according to the founders.

Europe is also seeing new natural cosmetic standards cropping up such as from the industry group NaTrue and last year from supermarket Tesco and retailer Boots for their line of organic cosmetic products.

Organic Monitor will be presenting about the latest trend on organic and natural cosmetics at the incoming Cosmetic Science Conference, part of the In-Cosmetics event in Amsterdam this April. A preview by Organic Monitor's technical manager Judi Beerling is shown here on ICIS TV (gotta plug the company I work for: About ICIS).
