I'm back from my short vacation and I am swamped with looming deadlines unfortunately. Because of that, some of my weekend news this week are from ICIS news (which is subscription based) so pls. bear with me if the links do not go straight to the company/organization's press releases.

Arizona closes plant
Arizona Chemical confirmed to ICIS news that will permanently close its chemical plant in Port St Joe, Florida, in July, affecting about 77 jobs. The Port St Joe plant produces pine-based rosins, rosin esters and fatty acids for the adhesives, oleochemicals and inks industries.

Green cement JV
The Polish office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has approved a 'green cement' joint venture between Ciech and French construction materials giant Lafarge, reported ICIS news. The base material for the cement would come from converting industrial fly ash from a Soda Polska Ciech sodium carbonate plant in central Poland.

Solar patents acquired
QD Soleilâ„¢, a division of Nanosys, acquired nanotechnology patents from Starfire Electronic Development and Marketing Corporation, which have the potential to dramatically improve the economics of solar energy by increasing process efficiencies and reducing the amount of raw materials required in the manufacture of photovoltaic cells.

Solar gas for Italy
The Linde Group has been awarded the exclusive contract to supply high purity gases to Italy's first thin-film solar module manufacturing plant in Campofranco (Sicily) produced by renewable energy company Moncada Energy Group. Linde will deliver on an ongoing bases nitrogen, hydrogen, silane and chamber cleaning gases which are essential to making thin-film solar cells.

Chrysler wants DOE money
Chrysler LLC Submits $448-Million Plan to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the rapid development and manufacturing of electric vehicles. The programs represent a 50/50 cost-share opportunity. Proposed vehicles to include Dodge Ram 1500 Plug-in Hybrid-electric Vehicles (PHEV), Chrysler Town & Country PHEVs and Chrysler Town & Country Electric Vehicles (EV)

Germany's solar sector is set for continued growth this year despite the recession, according to domestic industry association the Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar).

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is so concerned about industry not meeting its 2010 deadline for Reach data submission that it is launching an awareness campaign.

The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) is urging restraint in the use of degradable additives in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging.
