Coca-Cola moves massively into rPET

recyclepet CCE.jpgCoca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) will include 25% of recycled PET in its bottles by 2012, and is investing £5m in a jv plant with recyclers ECO Plastics in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in the UK.

The 10-year joint venture will double the amount of polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) recycled in the UK to 75,000 tonnes/year, in time for the London Olympics in 2012, according to an article in this week's Grocer, on the CCE website and covered last week in an article on ICIS news.

CCE is the world's thirdlargest independent CocaCola bottler.

The Blog isn't much of a fizzy drink consumer, apart from the occasional tonic water mixer, but feels sure that Coca-Cola's move can only boost interest in the weekly ICIS Recycled PET report (click here for sample report.)

There's more info on this in the icis.com article I wrote, including market reaction. Several players are sceptical that the new investment will help Coca-Cola achieve their sustainability objectives as the major issue in the European R-PET market at the moment is the availability of post-consumer bottles, which the extra reprocessing capacity won't help Coca-Cola obtain.
