Demand for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) was lacklustre in January and first half of February. Falling crude futures and sharp declines in global stock markets fueled talk that economic expansion in Asia was faltering quickly. Buyers kept away from the market and did not want to stock up inventories. The average spot price hovered under $1,150/tonne CFR (cost & freight) northeast (NE) Asia in the first one and half months of the year. After the Lunar New Year holidays in mid-February, feedstock styrene monomer (SM) and butadiene (BD) prices started to take off to the upside. Consequently, ABS suppliers raised offers successively into March in order to achieve workable margins. Initially, buying resistance was strong, but buyers started to accept higher prices subsequently when they found out that prices were not going to decline. Trades in March reached $1,340-1,400/tonne CFR NE Asia with buyers picking up cargoes on concerns that prices could escalate further.
