Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Asian acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices were largely flat in the second quarter. Prices in northeast Asia were mostly at around the $1,900/tonne CFR level. Weak demand throughout Asia had capped prices, despite suppliers’ attempts to raise offers.
Weak demand that prevailed in the Chinese domestic and exports sectors for most of the second quarter also derailed any price hike initiatives by sellers. A number of ABS suppliers reduced output to keep their inventories manageable.
In June, ABS prices started edging higher as feedstock prices of styrene, butadiene (BD) and acrylonitrile (ACN) rose on the back of elevated crude values. Consequently, ABS makers targeted higher prices and raised offers accordingly. Offers were at $1,940-2,000/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in the second half of June, up from $1,900-1,980/tonne CFR China in the first half of that month. Some buyers consequently started picking up parcels in anticipation of higher prices in the near term.
