Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene Overview Transcript
The Asian ABS market is the fastest growing among the stryrenic resins. This is mainly due to them being used in many applications.
Common useage for ABS include sectors such as automobiles, consumer electronics, office equipment, personal computers, toys and construction.
ABS can be fused with other plastics to form alloys. This further extends the useage of the resin in other sectors such as mobile phone casings which use PC/ABS alloy.
China is the largest importer and user of the resin in Asia given its huge manufacturing base.
The spot market is active and liquid with major sellers from Taiwan, Korea, and South East Asia competing for a piece of the action each week China continues to expand its domestic ABS capacity each year, but demand always increases in tandem, resulting in the continual need for large volume imports.

Updated to Q1 2015
European acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices have seen quite a lot of volatility in Q1 as a result of the fall and rise of the feedstock styrene contract price since the end of 2014. Additionally, an ever-increasing tightness for ABS since the beginning of the year led to prices rebounding in March following falls in January and February.
All three feedstocks fell in January, most notable being the €290/tonne drop in the styrene January contract, which came as a shock to many in the upstream and downstream markets. ABS producers had to pass through the feedstock drops to customers, resulting in a decrease of €130-150/tonne from December.
ABS prices dropped again in February on lower feeds, but only by €20-30/tonne because limited availability led to improved ABS demand.
March saw a sudden change in price direction as styrene rose €175/tonne, and ABS prices followed with increases of €130-150/tonne. The weak euro resulted in few imports into Europe, and European producers struggled to meet the increasing demand, with some closing order books mid-month.
