Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene Overview Transcript
The Asian ABS market is the fastest growing among the stryrenic resins. This is mainly due to them being used in many applications.
Common useage for ABS include sectors such as automobiles, consumer electronics, office equipment, personal computers, toys and construction.
ABS can be fused with other plastics to form alloys. This further extends the useage of the resin in other sectors such as mobile phone casings which use PC/ABS alloy.
China is the largest importer and user of the resin in Asia given its huge manufacturing base.
The spot market is active and liquid with major sellers from Taiwan, Korea, and South East Asia competing for a piece of the action each week China continues to expand its domestic ABS capacity each year, but demand always increases in tandem, resulting in the continual need for large volume imports.

Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Following the seasonal slowdown in demand during the August summer holiday period, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices rose €60-70/tonne in September, driven by the €85/tonne rise in the September feedstock styrene contract price, and rises in acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene (BD).
September demand did not perform as many expected. Political uncertainty in Syria, and an easing in styrene spot prices from a record high at the end of August, led to speculation that styrene would be lower in October. ABS buyers kept purchases to a minimum in September, and several ABS producers said demand was below forecasts.
Reductions in the October styrene and ACN prices saw better ABS buying activity and an improvement in demand from September. Overall demand, however, remains flat, and buyers continue to purchase on a hand-to-mouth basis to keep stocks to a minimum.
Feedback from ABS market participants attending K2013 in Dusseldorf in October was positive, with expectations of a slight improvement in 2014 market performance.
