Updated to Q1 2015
European acrylonitrile (ACN) contract prices fell in January and February before rebounding in March. Price movements were predominantly driven by feedstock costs. By March, contract prices were at €1,835-1,861/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe).
Spot prices fell sharply at the end of January because of oversupply, pressure from low Asian spot prices, and falling upstream values. Weak demand from the acrylic fibre sector caused oversupply, with distressed material available. Uncertainty in the market led to illiquidity and wide price ideas. By the end of the period January to March, prices were believed to have bottomed out because of the disappearance of distressed material, rising feedstock costs and maintenance scheduled for the second quarter.
