Updated to Q2 2014
European acrylonitrile (ACN) spot prices rose by $70-120/tonne in the period from April to June, to $1,850-1,920/tonne, on the back of globally tight supply.
Nevertheless, acrylic fibre demand remained weak and prices were being driven up purely by production outages across the world.
By the end of the period, buyers were holding off purchasing spot material because of uncertainty over the sustainability of prevailing price levels.
From April to June, Europe ACN contract prices rose by €35/tonne. Price rises were driven by feedstock cost increases. July ACN contract prices were expected to rise following the €15/tonne increase in the July propylene contract price. At the broadly accepted production ratio of 1.1 tonnes of propylene to 1 tonne of ACN, this represents a cost pass-through of €17/tonne.
Discussions were yet to begin in earnest by the end of the period.
