Updated to Q3 2016
US acrylonitrile prices trended higher over Q3 pressured by ongoing tight supply in the domestic and overseas markets.
INEOS Nitriles declared force majeure at its Green Lake, Texas facility on 15 July, after it was discovered that the main feedstock propylene pipeline had been compromised by flooding.
With repairs expected to take between 3-6 months, global supply has subsequently become very tight. This has been further compounded by planned and unplanned outages in the global market, particularly in Asia.
Domestic contract prices rose throughout the period, led by cost increases for main feedstock propylene. Spot export prices also moved higher, driven by supply-side constraints.
Less market activity was seen in the second half of the quarter, which market participants attributed to a lack of available product.
Supply is expected to remain tight util the end of the year, pending the completion of repairs at the INEOS facility.
