Updated to Q1 2015
Demand for European butanediol (BDO) was strong in the first quarter of 2015.
This has been attributed to a promising automotive sector, a good economic outlook in Europe and the weak euro against the dollar increasing local car manufacturers’ competitiveness.
However, plenty of BDO availability led to a price decrease in Q1 prices, which were assessed at €1,870-1,900/ tonne, a drop of €70/tonne from the fourth quarter of 2014.
A key feature of the quarter was the UN rejection of the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to place BDO and derivative gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) in Schedule I of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.
Putting BDO in Schedule I essentially would have meant banning the product and would have affected many downstream industries.
The debate did not have much effect on trade or demand for BDO during the quarter.
