Butyl acetate: Market overview
Asia’s butyl acetate (butac) prices would be driven largely by feedstock prices in the first quarter of 2014, industry sources said. Demand would be weaker as the Lunar New Year approaches in late January as end-users would keep lean inventories before the holiday. Most market participants agree that there is an oversupply of butac in Asia. Demand growth in southeast Asia is limited in the first quarter, a market source said. Besides seasonal weaker demand, political uncertainty in parts of the region is keeping buyers at the sidelines. Most market participants anticipate improved demand after the elections by March.
Expectations of business in the European butac market during the first quarter of 2014 are mixed. Some participants expect demand to pick up, as is traditionally the case at this time of year. This in turn could exert upward pressure on prices. However, others speak of an oversupply, limited restocking and the likelihood of prices remaining stable.
US butac ended 2013 strong, and indications are that it will get even stronger in the first quarter of 2014. Strong demand from the US automotive industry – combined with increases in feedstock propylene – led to butac prices in the US going up at the end of last year. Sources in the US indicate that such momentum could remain strong into 2014. Butac is used in high-end paints and coatings. Industries such automotive and construction affect butac supply and demand. If US auto sales hold steady in 2014, and the US construction sector continues to see steady growth, the US butac market could remain busy.

Butyl Acetate Methodology
About Butyl acetate
Butyl acetate is a colourless liquid with a fruity banana odour that is commonly used as a solvent in the production of lacquers, inks and adhesives. It is highly flammable and miscible with common organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, glycols and esters.
Butyl acetate is mainly used as a solvent in the production of paints and lacquers, inks, adhesives and hardened coatings. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a solvent and extraction agent, and used to purify penicillin.
Other uses include cosmetics and personal care products, fragrance solvent for perfumes, cleaning and car care products.
The main process for the manufacture of butyl acetate involves the esterification of butanol and acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst such as sulphuric acid.
