Butyl acetate: Market overview
The US butyl acetate (butac) contract saw a propylene-driven increase at the start of the year, though spot and contract prices flat-lined in recent weeks. However, US producer Eastman Chemical made a 4 cent/lb announcement for April, which could prompt other producers to do the same. The next quarter, which is the height of the paints and coatings season, could drive US butac prices up.
The European butac market has remained mostly flat throughout the first quarter of the year, and this looks set to continue into Q2. Most participants agree that demand is poor, despite indications of the economy improving. Following a €10/tonne increase in the April contract price for feedstock propylene, butac producers struggled to increase prices for April. Participants are uncertain whether there will be any seasonal improvement of demand for butac, and the outlook remains bleak.

Butyl Acetate Methodology
About Butyl acetate
Butyl acetate is a colourless liquid with a fruity banana odour that is commonly used as a solvent in the production of lacquers, inks and adhesives. It is highly flammable and miscible with common organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, glycols and esters.
Butyl acetate is mainly used as a solvent in the production of paints and lacquers, inks, adhesives and hardened coatings. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a solvent and extraction agent, and used to purify penicillin.
Other uses include cosmetics and personal care products, fragrance solvent for perfumes, cleaning and car care products.
The main process for the manufacture of butyl acetate involves the esterification of butanol and acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst such as sulphuric acid.
