Updated to Q4 2014
The European butyl acetate (butac) market has continued to experience relatively stable prices and flat demand throughout most of the fourth quarter, despite BP declaring a force majeure on its acetic acid supply from its plant in Hull, UK, on 4 October.
The FM was still ongoing in December.
A significant cumulative drop of the monthly contract price for feedstock propylene during Q4 also had little impact on butac prices.
Market participants often speak of a disconnection between feedstock values and those of butac. The consensus is that supply and demand have a far greater effect.
The butac market is said to have failed to recover from the impact of the 2008 economic crisis, which negatively affected end-user markets such as the automobile industry.
The butac price range did see a small softening in December as some suppliers were keen to offload stocks ahead of the year end.
