Updated to Q1 2015
Asia caprolactam (capro) spot prices fell marginally in the first quarter of 2015, with early declines erased by gains later in the quarter. Capro spot price changes were largely attributed to a volatile upstream benzene market. During the steep downtrend in capro prices, buyers were largely sidelined in the market while reducing their plant production rates amid slow demand from the nylon chips sector. Prices then rose due to tight supply led by concentrated plant shutdowns in China in March, though sluggish downstream demand for nylon chips capped the price increases. One of the major plants that underwent a turnaround is Baling Hengyi Petrochemical’s 200,000 tonne/year plant which was shut for two weeks from early March.
Northeast Asia spot prices were at $1,700-1,750/tonne CFR (cost and freight) NE(northeast) Asia in early January but fell by 13% to $1,480-1,520/tonne CFR NE Asia in early February. Prices reversed the downtrend and closed at $1,650-1,680/tonne CFR NE Asia by the end of March.
In mid-March, DSM Netherlands announced the sell-off of their majority stake in the capro business to CVC Capital Partners, a private equity firm.
