Updated to Q4 2016
Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) in Europe started the fourth quarter with a similar price flatness to that seen at the end of the third quarter. DMT October contract was at a rollover from the previous month. In November, DMT contact prices increased to hit its third highest value of the year, while in December it reached an annual peak.
These movements were calculated based on upstream paraxylene (PX) monthly contract settlements. DMT's other feedstock, methanol, is also included in this formula but only settles once a quarter.
PX had a split settlement in October but prices moved up in November due to the weak euro and higher PX values in Asia. It rose in value once more in December due to crude oil’s futures rally and the strengthening of the US dollar.
For the first half of 2016, methanol had decreasing prices. However, it firmed in the third and fourth quarters of 2016.
