Updated to Q2 2014
Formula dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) contract prices follow upstream paraxylene (PX), where monthly contracts were flat in April and May, but increased by €30/tonne into June.
DMT imports into the EU from the rest of the world were down by 37% year on year in April, data from European statistics agency Eurostat showed in June. April 2014 imports amounted to 266 tonnes, compared with 425 tonnes in April 2013. Eurostat import/export data is subject to revision as more detailed information becomes available. EU figures comprise the aggregate of member states data published by Eurostat.
PX continues to be tight globally, with low operating rates in Asia drawing product in the region. Spot availability is said to be very limited in Europe. As a result, spot prices rose sharply in June, despite low end-market demand.
Methanol, DMT’s secondary feedstock, settled down by €90/tonne to €322/tonne FOB Rotterdam from the second to the third quarter. This will be reflected in the July DMT price.
The €90/tonne decrease for the third-quarter 2014 comes after European spot prices fell by €133/tonne between late February and early June.
