Updated to Q1 2015
European monthly ethanolamine contract prices fluctuated during the first quarter of 2015, following a mixed upstream sentiment and steady, but not strong demand.
In January, prices largely dropped because of the fall in the upstream ethylene contract price, with imported material, believed to be from Russia the most competitively priced. Di-ethanolamines (DEA), however, was most resistant to the downward pressure in January, as availability was more limited compared to the other homologues.
In January, prices were assessed at €1,310-1,430/tonne FD (free delivered) northwest Europe for mono-ethanolamines (MEA), € 1,150-1,230/tonne for DEA and €1,300-1,410/tonne FD NWE for tr-ethanolamine (TEA 99%). This represents a drop of 30-85/tonne for MEA, a rollover to minus €10/tonne for DEA and a reduction if €30-90/tonne for TEA 99% from the previous month.
In February, prices largely softened amid further upstream cost relief, although there was some stability among certain suppliers and for TEA in particular for market-related reasons. In March, prices are stable to slightly up, as the hike in the upstream ethylene contract price was weighed against satisfactory but not strong demand, along with largely sufficient supply. On top of this, prices were steady in some cases, depending on what had previously been implemented in February, when feedstock costs came down.
