The report offers readers details of trade transactions, news on the supply-demand balance, export-import information and general sentiment for price direction. It also discusses up and downstream market developments.

Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
The prices of ethyl acetate (etac) offered by China, the regional benchmark, failed to match the significant gains in feedstock acetic acid prices in the second quarter, edging 1.4% higher in the three-month period to settle at an average of $912.50/tonne FOB China in late June. In contrast, acetic acid prices in east China surged by 25.4% over the same period, spurred by overlapping plant turnarounds and production problems.
Etac prices failed to keep up with raw material prices because the prolonged problem of oversupply in recent years has made regional buyers resistant to prices higher than $910-920/tonne FOB China. The early-June commissioning of a new 100,000 tonne/year etac plant in Japan also spurred speculations that demand for Chinese etac in Japan, China’s largest overseas market, may decline as a local Japanese producer boosts its cost competitiveness.
In a bid to counter the acetic acid price surge since March, along with its tight availability, several Chinese etac makers opted to either curtail their plant operating rates or to halt production altogether in May and June. However, the consequent fall in Chinese etac output did not lead to any price improvement, as regional buyers held back in anticipation of a downward price correction.
