Updated to Q2 2015
Ethylene oxide (EO) prices tracked upstream ethylene developments in Q2, with EO prices soaring in the second quarter, after months of declines that ended in March.
The vast majority of EO business is transacted on a formula to ethylene representing 80-85% of the change in the ethylene price. An average value of 82% is used for ICIS price assessments.
There were significant and unexpected cutbacks in supply through the quarter.
INEOS Oxide, BASF and Sasol all declared force majeures and there was an unprecedented number of force majeures activated upstream, at European ethylene crackers.
Downstream monoethylene glycol (MEG) spot prices increased to levels not seen since September 2012, because of tight supply and price spikes in the dominant Asian market. This, coupled with a flurry of production problems across the chain, also resulted in soaring contract prices.
Ethanolamines prices were flat until an uptick from May to June. This was driven by reduced supply resulting from a spate of production problems, along with higher upstream ethylene costs for four months in a row.
