Updated to Q1 2015
US ethylene oxide (EO) contract prices in the first quarter (Q1) of 2015 continued the downtrend started in Q4 2014, following falling prices in the feedstock ethylene contract.
The majority of EO contracts are formula-based, and price movement comprises 80% of the change in the ethylene price and an additional conversion fee, or adder. Like ethylene, EO settles at the beginning of the month for the previous month.
For February contract values, EO stood 4.4% lower on average from December values.
Prices remain under downward pressure from weak crude oil values and persistently low ethylene spot prices.
For EO contracts that expired in December 2014 and came up for renewal, contract renewals saw an increase in the 2015 adders to the high 20s cents/lb range from the mid-20s cents/lb level, some market sources said. Adder number increases were attributed to tightness seen in the EO market.
