Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer: Market overview
Global demand for ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) is expected to remain soft in 2013 because of a sluggish global automotive industry amid a slowing global economy.
A deep recession in Europe, a fragile US economy, a slowing Chinese economy, and a weak Indian economy are expected to weigh on global demand for EPDM.
EPDM is used in a wide range of applications, including gaskets and window seals in the automotive industry, as well as roofing membrane and electrical insulation material in the construction industry.
Slower-than-expected growth in the automotive industry in China, the world’s largest automotive market, and dismal auto sales in India have weighed on demand for EPDM in Asia.
A depreciated Japanese currency against the US dollar is likely to see Japanese EPDM makers increase their sales in the export market in 2013, providing stiff competition to other manufacturers.
The slump in the automotive industry in Europe has spurred European EPDM suppliers to divert their surplus stocks to Asia, which will cap any upward potential for EPDM prices.
