Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
US ethylene contract prices fell by 0.5 cents/lb ($11/tonne) during the third quarter as demand weakened, mostly from economic concerns and declining construction activity.
Contract prices were also softened by long demand, especially in the Texas-based Williams System, as the Evangeline pipeline shutdown prevented several Texas-based ethylene producers from moving their material to their preferred downstream destinations in Louisiana.
The long supply was also exacerbated by strong operating rates, as only one major US cracker was down during this time.
US ethylene spot prices fell by 9.2% during the quarter, hitting a 15-month low with a trade at 43.625 cents/lb on the back of long supply in the Williams System and weak demand
Spot ethylene prices on the Louisiana-based Choctaw System, however, surged in the third quarter, trading at a premium of 15-20 cents/lb to Williams ethylene.
Spot prices are expected to rebound once the pipeline is restored to full rates in December 2013 or January 2014.
