Expandable polystyrene Asia Transcript
The ICIS weekly Asian expandable polystyrene, or EPS report covers two grades, the packaging and the block flame retardant types.
A complete overview of the key Chinese market is given. Working closely with our colleagues in China, we quote spot prices on a CFR basis and provide domestic price assessments for both grades.
Besides providing demand and supply commentary for the region, we also provide plant operations as an additional indicator of supply. Commentary on feedstock styrene monomer is also in the report giving clients an added perspective on the production margins of EPS producers.
Included is also information on the Taiwanese local market, market analysis on the South East Asia market and a section on export markets.
Since we speak to all the major players who produce, buy and sell EPS, ICIS builds up a comprehensive and unbiased view of the market. This is useful for those looking for an independent reference or benchmark for spot transactions.

Updated to Q2 2016
Asia expandable polystyrene (EPS) prices trended lower in the second quarter. Persistently weak demand across the region depressed resin prices. Spot prices were around $1,275/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in early April, while successive losses saw prices decline to $1,165/tonne CFR China in late June. Suppliers concede that the construction sector in China was weaker than expected despite the seasonal peak usually during the middle of the year. Demand for EPS from the packaging sector was also lacklustre as the manufacturing sector did not pick up substantially in the second quarter. Weak performance in the feedstock styrene monomer (SM) sector also exerted downward pressure on EPS values. Prices of block flame retardant EPS resins remained around $50/tonne higher than the packaging resins. Sellers acknowledged that demand for FR resins was also tepid in the second quarter. While the third quarter manufacturing for exports season in China will kick off imminently, EPS sellers reported limited improvement in demand.
