Updated to Q1 2016
US glycol ether spot prices were stable-to-soft in the first quarter of 2016 on balanced supply and demand.
Demand was at normal levels for the time of year, and it was considered flat against the same period of 2015.
Despite tightening of supply in upstream ethylene oxide (EO) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) in the first quarter, the ethylene-series glycol ethers (EGE) sector was not short of supply. EO and MEG supply got tighter during Q1 because Indorama Ventures declared force majeure on its purified EO and MEG because of production issues at its plant in Clear Lake, Texas. The plant is expected to restart in early Q2.
Despite the feedstock supply limitations, market sources said that EGE was available. Supply of propylene-series glycol ethers (PGE) was also available.
Upstream ethylene and propylene spot prices rebounded in mid-Q1, before turning back down at the end of the quarter. Feedstock n-butanol spot prices were steady in Q1.
Glycol ethers are largely used in paints and coatings. The automotive, housing and construction industries are major markets for them.
