Hexane: Market overview
The hexane market has been balanced to tight in recent years, because of decreased production.
Demand for hexane usually increases during the olive harvest season because it is used for extracting oil, but this is now drawing to a close. One view from the buy side of the market is that consumption is low in the early part of the year and 2014 has begun consistent with that norm, with little likelihood of much change in the next three months.
Nevertheless, the market is primarily feedstock-driven, namely naphtha. The European naphtha market is bracing itself for fundamental changes in 2014 as it is forced to loosen its tight grip over the US export market. The US, traditionally a naphtha importer, is now settling comfortably into its new role as a naphtha exporter.
A decline in demand for naphtha from the petrochemical sector in the US - as cheap ethane has replaced the feedstock at many US crackers - is also paving the way for more US naphtha exports. Potentially increased availability of naphtha implies downward pressure on hexane values.
