Updated to Q2 2015
US melamine prices rose 3 cents/lb for the second quarter, the third straight quarterly increase as imported melamine from China and Trinidad and Tobago was hit with hefty duties as the following a complaint of unfair trade practices against the material.
The duties effectively priced material from those countries out of the US market, a major shift in trade patterns because China and Trinidad were the top two US suppliers to the US in 2014, according to data from the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
That has translated into price increase of 16 cents/lb over the past three quarters and increases of from 3-5 cents/lb are now being discussed in the market for the third quarter.
The rise in domestic prices and a strengthening dollar against the euro have created an opportunity for European producers to sell into the US market at greater profit margins than they can get at home.
That shift is beginning to happen, market participants say. But any change in trade patterns is likely to be slow because Europe does not have significant extra volumes beyond what the European market consumes.
So far this year, imports are down by 18% and exports are up almost 30%, according to ITC data.
