Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Spot prices for mono propylene glycol (MPG) were flat in the second half of August 2013, then stable-to-firm from early September to early November. During this period, price hike initiatives for MPG were implemented by producers, in tandem with the upward pressure on feedstock propylene oxide (PO) prices, as they attempted to pass on the higher feedstock PO costs to the downstream markets. A few vertically integrated producers of PO and MPG indicated that if MPG prices were not raised, it might be more profitable to sell PO instead of retaining it for captive use in MPG production.
However, in response to the price hike initiatives, there was buying resistance due to the soft demand conditions from both the industrial-grade (PGI) sector and the pharmaceutical-grade (USP) sector. As a result, the MPG price uptick was slow and spread out for both the PGI grade and USP grade during the mid-August to early November period.
