Non-Phthalate Plasticizers: Market overview
Updated to Q2 2015
All facets of the US market are looking to Q2 2015 to be the starting point for a seasonal uptick in demand fuelled by the spring and summer construction season. The marketplace would seem to be primed for an expanded uptick with prices low following a dramatic winter price drop in petrochemicals and expectations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of US GDP growing at a 3.6% rate this year. But an inconsistent recovery in the US housing market – a major end-user of plasticizers – has some concerned that demand may not exceed normal levels.
Improved demand – particularly for dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) – in the China market could lead to price increases in the near term. Some market players, however, are not too bullish about this increase in demand and are expecting spot prices to track feedstock costs closely. Several end-users for diisononyl phthalate (DINP) in China are likely to continue to limit their consumption for the plasticizer. A DINP producer in northeast Asia is also likely to switch to the production of other types of plasticizers if inventories continue to be high.
European plasticizers demand is expected to increase in Q2 2015 due to a seasonal pick-up. Producers are likely to try to gain margin in the second quarter of the year, after considerable price falls in Q1. The weak euro versus the dollar is likely to discourage some importers from targeting the eurozone. However, price pressure from local competitors will probably continue.
