Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
US nylon prices were steady in the first part of the third quarter, before edging up in early October with a slight increase that continued to hold.
Sources said supply and demand remain balanced, despite drops in feedstock costs. Nylon is made from butadiene (BD) or caprolactam (capro), and both had seen price declines early in the quarter.
Demand for nylon remained strong, as the US automotive sector continued to require material for plastic parts and body panels and as the US housing industry saw an improving market for material in appliances, home electronics, some carpet and other fibres.
Filtration, which is a niche market for nylon that accounts for less than 20% of global nylon demand, also did well, running about 10% ahead of 2013 expectation, sources said.
US nylon prices rose the first week of October on strong demand from the automotive sector and the start of the high season for monofilament, which is used in gardening tools.
Prices remained steady through the rest of the quarter, although there was talk about a downward trend.
