Polybutadiene Overview Transcript
Polybutadiene rubber or PBR is polymerised butadiene. Butadiene is the main feedstock for PBT.
It is used mainly by the tyre makers in the production of tyres for the automotives industry.
The major PBR producers in Asia are based in Northeast Asia in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The major buyers are the tyre makers; they are based in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
It is a product that is traded in the spot market by traders as well as by suppliers.

Polybutadiene rubber: Market overview
Global demand for polybutadiene rubber (BR) is expected to remain subdued in the first quarter of 2014 because of the sluggish global automotive industry.
A fragile US economy, recession-hit Europe, slowing Chinese economy and weak Indian economy have weighed on demand for BR, which is used mainly in the production of tyres for commercial vehicles.
Although auto sales have picked up in the US recently, and are expected to improve in Europe, the slowing Chinese economy and weak Indian economy are likely to see slower growth in auto sales in these two giant Asian economies.
Auto sales in India have been dismal because of rising fuel costs, high interest rates and poor consumer confidence as the faltering economy grinds to a halt.
In China, the various restrictive measures implemented by the Chinese government to combat congestion and pollution, may slow down auto production in the world’s largest automotive market.
The feedstock butadiene (BD) cost is also another factor that may determine the BR price trend in the first quarter.

Butadiene Rubber Methodology
About Polybutadiene rubber
Polybutadiene butadiene rubber (PBR), sometimes called polybutadiene rubber (BR), is a polymerised butadiene. Butadiene is the main feedstock for BR. Its key properties include high elasticity, good wear resistance, along with good flexibility at variable temperatures – it is especially good for uses which require exposure to low temperatures.
The major use of BR is in tyres with a high proportion of the polymer produced going into treads and sidewalls. BR imparts excellent abrasion resistance (good tread wear), and low rolling resistance (good fuel economy) due to its low glass transition temperature.
Apart from tyre treads - belts, hoses, gaskets and other automobile parts are also made from polybutadiene because it stands up to cold temperatures better than other elastomers.
BR also has a major application as an impact modifier for polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin.
