Polybutylene Terephthalate Europe Transcript
The weekly ICIS engineering plastics report is an essential source of market intelligence in the polyacetal POM and the polybutylene terephthalate PBT industries.
We gather analyse and assess information to provide complete, detailed views on the POM and the PBT pricing environments. The report includes comprehensive coverage of the quarterly POM and PBT contracts.
Market commentary closely tracks supply and demand, production information and details on feedstock pricing of butane diol and dimethyl terephthalate.
The first quarterly contract price assesses natural-grade POM on a free delivered Northwest Europe basis. The quarterly PBT contract quotes are for filled, unfilled and flame retardant grades. All price assessments are POM on a free delivered Northwest Europe basis in Euros per kg with conversions to US cents per pound.
Quotes for both products reflect settlements between buyers and sellers. All quotes are based on truck loads of 20 to 25 tonnes.
Cargo sizes and specifications vary according to different customers and grades. We report on engineering plastic contract deals ranging from 1,000 to 200,000 tonnes per annum.
The report provides its readers with accurate and reliable market intelligence.

Updated to Q2 2014
European polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) players are getting ready for Q3 negotiations, with sources expecting to have their main discussions towards the end of July.
A few contracts have already been agreed at rollovers, but the majority are yet to be discussed and finalised.
In April, second-quarter contract prices rolled over with filled and unfilled PBT quarterly contract prices remaining at €3.15-3.16/kg FD NWE.
Towards the end of the second quarter, PBT demand came back to levels typical for the season following an increase of at least 10% in the first half of 2014 compared to the same time last year. The market was balanced and sufficiently supplied.
The uptick was largely attributed to increased production by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), especially in the automotive sector.
Some suppliers are cautious about Asian import volumes increasing but others say there is no reason to worry as Asian imports are filling the capacity gap left by a major European producer that closed its plant a few years ago.
Separately, the Registration, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) certifications imposed on non-European imports are already limiting Asian imports.

Polybutylene terephthalate or PBT is a semi-crystalline, white or off-white polyester similar in both composition and properties to polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It has slightly lower strength and stiffness than PET. PBT is softer, but it has higher impact strength and very similar chemical resistance. It is usually preferred for industrial scale moulding due to quicker crystallising. It is widely used in electronic, electrical, communications, fibre optics and automotive industries.
