Polycarbonate Europe Transcript
The European Polycarbonate report is published weekly on a Wednesday. We cover GP moulding and GP extrusion quarterly contracts.
The reason we cover the report as a weekly report is because there are many different end uses of polycarbonate, things like automotive, construction, optical media. And for our customers to get a holistic picture and understand what’s going on in each of those individual markets they need a service like us that talks to all of the actors.
Another important factor with polycarbonate is there is strong import and export activity between Europe and Asia. And to fully understand what’s going on, then they need to be talking to multiple actors. I mean, ICIS have a very strong offering, not only in Europe, but also in Asia and that allows us to see across the different regions and build up a picture of what exactly is happening in the market and find out exactly why it’s happening.
We speak to buyers, we speak to producers, and we speak to traders, and we try and speak to as many of the involved parties as possible and the reason for that is because that means we increase the accuracy, the reliability and the scope of our service. And that’s what our customer really rely on us for.

Updated to Q3 2016
European polycarbonate (PC) prices slipped lower over the last three months. Market pricing was best viewed as soft rather than weak and the decline in values was gradual and relatively slight.
General purpose extrusion grade PC was assessed down by €0.05/kg in July and by another €0.05/kg in August, followed by a rollover in September. General purpose moulding grade, characterised by quarterly contracts, slipped €0.05/kg in Q3.
Although the decline differed a little between the two grades – and bearing in mind that quarterly contracts are set for three months and there is less opportunity to adjust prices – the reason for the fall in both was basically the same. There was ample supply. Demand was seen as continuing to be quite healthy, especially in the still strong automotive industry, which might offer another explanation why moulding grade sustained a more marginal fall than extrusion PC.
