Recycled polyethylene terephthalate Overview Transcript
Until 2010, the key driver for the recycled polyethylene terephthalate market, also known as RPET market, was the virgin PET price. That’s because traditionally companies purchased R-PET material as a lower cost alternative to virgin.
However, since 2010 virgin PET and recycled PET prices have decoupled. This is because of an increased focus on social corporate responsibly and carbon cost.
In the short to mid-term, sustainability targets are expected to become an increasingly significant factor in R-PET pricing, and the bottle-to-bottle market is expected to increase its share of R-PET consumption.
However, at the same time as market demand is growing, collection rates – that’s the post-consumer material that’s brought into the recycling chain- have been broadly fat, resulting in structural shortages.

Polyethylene terephthalate (Recycled): Market overview
Updated to Q4 2016
Following exceptionally warm weather across parts of Europe in September, market participants expect post-consumer PET bottle availability to remain strong in Q4, continuing a trend seen throughout 2016. Asian R-PET recyclers also expect supply availability of post-consumer bottle and hence R-PET flakes to be steady. It remains to be seen how this will influence pricing developments.
Demand for R-PET flakes is showing signs of improvement as the market moves into Q4. Chinese buyers of R-PET flakes said their downstream recycled polyester sales to Europe and US picked up at the end of Q3, within their expectations, for manufacturing of end-product, that uses recycled polyester as fillers, to meet yearend and winter peak demand. This has led to some expectation of more balance in the R-PET flake market. However, price direction will also depend on how virgin polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices move, as virgin PET competes with R-PET in certain applications and low virgin PET prices limit the possibility for higher R-PET pricing.

Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Methodology
About Polyethylene terephthalate (Recycled)
Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) can be used to make many products including fibre for polyester carpet; fabrics for T-shirts, long underwear, athletic shoes, luggage, upholstery and sweaters; fiberfill for sleeping bags and winter coats; industrial strapping, sheet and film; automotive parts, such as luggage racks, headliners, fuse boxes, bumpers, grilles and door panels; as well as new PET containers for both food and non-food products.
RPET has been largely consumed by the fibre industry as it is sensitive to thermal degradation as well as degradation from contaminants such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Degraded RPET is not suitable for bottle to bottle, strapping and sheet extrusion applications which demand high quality RPET in order retain the PET properties of stability and pressure-resistance.
The level of recycling and availability of RPET differs greatly by country. In Europe, Germany leads the pack and recycles around 50% of its PET. Other countries such as France, UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Italy have also been active in recycling.
