Recycled polyethylene terephthalate Overview Transcript
Until 2010, the key driver for the recycled polyethylene terephthalate market, also known as RPET market, was the virgin PET price. That’s because traditionally companies purchased R-PET material as a lower cost alternative to virgin.
However, since 2010 virgin PET and recycled PET prices have decoupled. This is because of an increased focus on social corporate responsibly and carbon cost.
In the short to mid-term, sustainability targets are expected to become an increasingly significant factor in R-PET pricing, and the bottle-to-bottle market is expected to increase its share of R-PET consumption.
However, at the same time as market demand is growing, collection rates – that’s the post-consumer material that’s brought into the recycling chain- have been broadly fat, resulting in structural shortages.

Updated to Q1 2016
The US recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) market saw plummeting prices based on continued movement in virgin polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
The R-PET pellet sector saw significant decreases in the quarter. Recycled pellets are the closest recycled material to virgin PET resin. As a result, virgin PET and pellets sometimes compete against each other in the market. Falling PET prices in the US have led to decreased pellet values.
The bale market also saw decreases during the quarter, although some slightly higher movement on the west coast was heard towards the end of the quarter due to higher demand from China.
