Recycled polyethylene terephthalate Overview Transcript
Until 2010, the key driver for the recycled polyethylene terephthalate market, also known as RPET market, was the virgin PET price. That’s because traditionally companies purchased R-PET material as a lower cost alternative to virgin.
However, since 2010 virgin PET and recycled PET prices have decoupled. This is because of an increased focus on social corporate responsibly and carbon cost.
In the short to mid-term, sustainability targets are expected to become an increasingly significant factor in R-PET pricing, and the bottle-to-bottle market is expected to increase its share of R-PET consumption.
However, at the same time as market demand is growing, collection rates – that’s the post-consumer material that’s brought into the recycling chain- have been broadly fat, resulting in structural shortages.

The US recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) market the last three months has been a haze of declining values, and an expected demand that never occurred.
The recycling market usually sees high demand in spring and summer. That demand this year was absent. Many attributed the softness to falling crude values and lower prices of virgin PET resin. In some instances, virgin PET competes with recycled material.
Bale prices on both the US east and west coasts saw some softening during the quarter. Bale exports from the US west coast were considerably down, due to the China economy. Most material exported to China from the US comes from the west coast.
Recycled pellets – the material closest to virgin PET resin – held their value during the quarter, but eventually saw softening in September as the global PET market continued to see price declines.
The bale market in Mexico saw minor price decreases for the quarter.
