The Turkish polyethylene (PE) outlook for the second quarter is not very clear due to several factors that are impacting the Turkish market. While players will look to the European ethylene contract price movements for an idea of feedstock cost direction, supply and demand factors in Turkey will also play a key part in Turkish PE prices.
Limited supply at the beginning of March saw prices increase significantly, but underlying demand in Turkey is weak, and upward momentum slowed during April. The May C2 contract price will influence prices in Turkey, but if demand remains weak, Turkish buyers will continue to purchase on a hand-to-mouth basis, and suppliers will find it hard to pass on large increases to the Turkish market.
As a result, supply levels may drop during the second quarter if Middle Eastern producers decide to send material to Asia, where netbacks are improving compared to the Turkish market, or to Europe, which started the second quarter in a state of extreme tightness. However, Iranian suppliers could make up some of the shortfall in any drop from Middle Eastern producers and remain an important factor in determining where Turkish prices head in coming months.
