Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
The price of domestic polypropylene (PP) yarn grade decreased slightly from yuan (CNY) 11,300/tonne in mid-August 2013 to CNY11,050/tonne at the end of August. After that, the price rose drastically to CNY11,900/tonne in mid-November in spite of several corrections in mid-September and mid-October.
PP yarn prices fell between mid-August and end August as increasing supply suppressed market confidence, with the restart of Datang International's 500,000 tonne/year and Hohhot Petrochemical’s 150,000 tonne/year PP plant in mid-August.
However, prices rose at the end of August, boosted by the shutdown of Xuzhou Haitian’s 300,000 tonne/year PP plant, Jinxi Petrochemical’s 150,000 tonne/year PP plant in early September and Fujian Refining & Chemical’s 520,000 tonne/year PP plant in mid-October. Furthermore, traders were reluctant to sell at a low price since they completed the sales plan approaching the end of this month.
In mid-September and mid-October, price hikes met strong buyer resistance because the current spot PP prices are near this year’s record highs.
