Updated to Q1 2015
Spot prices for propylene oxide (PO) in China hit a floor in first-half January at an average of $1,525/tonne CFR (cost & freight) CMP (China main port) and stayed flat for six consecutive sessions before rebounding to reach $1,665/tonne CFR CMP in late March. Average prices were at a near two-year low after having lost around 24% of its value from a multi-year peak of $2,000/tonne CFR CMP achieved in October 2014.
The slump in prices was largely due to tumbling raw material prices, including that of feedstock propylene, since Q4 last year. Prices rebounded from February onwards amid tight supply due to pent-up demand as buyers had held back on their purchase for too long when the bottom of upstream prices were still unclear.
In domestic China, prices also rose relentlessly since February on the back of relatively tighter supply as some producers in the Shandong region were running their plants at low rates. However, the extent of the increases tapered towards the later part of March amid not improving demand from the downstream polyether polyols sector.
