Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Asian propylene prices were at $1,350/tonne CFR (cost & freight) northeast (NE) Asia at the end of the third quarter, down by $90/tonne from end-June. Prices declined because of new domestic supply in the key Chinese market and reduced derivative demand in Taiwan.
However, prices did correct sharply in August when gas explosions in Taiwan’s petrochemical hub in Kaohsiung led to a prolonged outage at LCY Chemical’s 400,000 tonne/year downstream polypropylene (PP) facilities. The lower domestic propylene consumption prompted Taiwanese producers to export their surplus product and regional suppliers to divert their term shipments from Taiwan to China.
In China, spot buying activity for imported cargoes for September and October arrival into the country was dampened by the start-up of two local propane dehydrogenation (PDH) units. The new facilities have a combined propylene capacity of 1.05m tonnes/year and they attained on-specification output between the end of August and early September.
