Refinery Solvents: Market overview
Hexane market overview
Despite an expected summer slowdown in Europe, Hexane market dynamics have been stable. Prices continue to be directed by upstream naphtha activity. European naphtha markets have been boosted in September 2016 by good gasoline blending and domestic petrochemical demand. Production, however, declined slightly because of refinery maintenance.
Naphtha solvent market overview
Conditions are balanced in the naphtha solvent market, with swings in pricing directed by upstream gasoline movements. In terms of cyclical trends, demand remains good in the first, second and fourth quarters, with a summer holiday slowdown in the third quarter.
White spirit market overview
Demand for white spirit has dwindled in the last couple of years with some players withdrawing from the market due to oversupply and environmental concerns in the decorative paint sector which have led to a shift to using water-based chemical formulas. Prices of white spirit are largely determined by jet kerosene feedstock costs. Jet kerosene demand is strong in summer, but requirements are likely to ease as the holiday season ends.
