Styrene acrylonitrile Overview Transcript
Styrene acrylonitrile or SAN is a transparent resin made from styrene and acrylonitrile.
SAN is used to make consumable items like cigarette lighters, tooth brush holders and trays in refrigerators. It’s also used to make fan-blades and other items requiring transparency.
China is the main users of SAN in Asia, given its large manufacturing base and position as a leading exporter of finished goods.
SAN usage is expected to grow as demand for consumer items increases each year. Domestic demand in China has become an important outlet for SAN in Asia, as local demand for finished goods and consumer items is set to grow strongly over the next several years.
The market in Asia is essentially spot, with demand and supply conditions often moving prices, although speculation does often accentuate these price movements.

Styrene acrylonitrile: Market overview
Updated to Q2 2015
The Asia styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) market is expected to remain weak in the second quarter with demand in the key Chinese showing limited improvement. Suppliers concede that demand has not picked up as expected. End-users reported a fewer-than-expected number of orders for finished goods, hence buying interest for SAN was expected to stay weak into April. With the extended May Day holidays in early May, trade is expected to slow in the second half of April and business might not fully pick up until late May.
In Europe, prices will be largely driven by the styrene monomer cost, although the market remains significantly tighter compared to the second quarter 2014. The weak euro has discouraged imports into the EU from Asia, reducing the volume of material coming from the region. However, despite the reduced availability, if styrene drops in May or June, SAN producers will be under pressure from buyers to lower prices following producer insistence of passing on the full composite cost of the €300/tonne April monomer contract increase.

Styrene Acrylonitrile Methodology
About Styrene acrylonitrile
Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) is a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. It is an optically clear resin which when compared with general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS) has improved toughness and rigidity, better solvent and chemical resistance, and somewhat greater heat resistance.
SAN copolymer ranks among the hard engineering plastics. Its properties are influenced both by its molecular weight and by its acrylonitrile content. If the two parameters are increased simultaneously, this will raise the strength, rigidity, impact strength, heat resistance and stress cracking resistance.
Key end uses for SAN are household and sanitary applications, office articles, cosmetic packaging, electrical, transparent covers, lighters, sanitary applications, medical applications and battery housings.
