Toluene Europe Transcript
The European toluene report is a weekly report that is published every Friday. We cover the monthly contract so there is a range of settlements between major buyers and sellers.
We also have spot prices in there, both in Rotterdam, as well as the Mediterranean region.
The report contains production news, whether there are any plant shutdowns or any major changes in output, also trade flows such as imports and exports between regions.
Because toluene is part of the aromatics complex it can be used to make benzenes and xylenes if the economics are right, so it is an important market to keep an eye on.

April contracts were settled between a range of $1,114-1,117/tonne FOB NWE, down $10-11/tonne from the previous month. With US and Asian prices showing signs of weakness in March, there had been an expectation among some players that European numbers would move lower.
Balanced availability helped support European pricing, and the gains seen for benzene also made hydrodealkylation (HDA) production, converting toluene to benzene, viable economically. However, weak global pricing was limiting export opportunities and trader interest throughout the month.
May contracts eventually settled at $1,117-1,121.50/tonne, up $3-4.50/tonne, with the drop in benzene values limiting any further demand from HDA units.
June contracts settled lower at $1,111-1,115/tonne, with limited spot activity and some slight weakening of gasoline prices to move back below $1,000/tonne FOB adding some downward pressure. However, as benzene saw another sharp rise over the course of the month, this pushed toluene prices back up closer to $1,150-1,200/tonne. Higher US pricing also supported exports out of Europe, but the steep backwardation of the market there kept many European players wary.
