Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
US VAM prices slipped again during the quarter ended in early November, with little change in spot values and a 2.5% crop in contract prices. Slippage in both prices stemmed from an 8% decline in feedstock US ethylene from ample supplies.
Weak demand continues to plague the market. A Celanese exec said VAM plants are operating at about 70% globally, with no shortage of material. As an example, the shutdown of two VAM plants in Europe were announced in the quarter, with lower-cost imports from the US cited as a competitive pressure.
US VAM production rose 14% in the third quarter of 2013 from the same period in 2012, according to data from the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM). The year-on-year gain reflected sizable US VAM export increases during the quarter, primarily from greater shipments to Europe.
In trade, US VAM exports in August soared 58% year on year on increased shipments to Europe, especially Belgium, according to data from the US International Trade Commission (ITC). Shipments to Belgium - the largest destination – and to Italy more than doubled.
