Japan's nuclear-free roadmap fails to resolve short-term uncertainty

Japanese government decision to phase out nuclear power by 2040 will expand LNG demand if cost and political pressures are overcome.

During September, the Japanese prime minister unveiled a new energy strategy for Japan, calling for the phasing out of nuclear power by the end of the 2030s. The new policy envisions a larger role for renewable, energy efficiency and fossils fuels.

The policy has been immediately challenged by Japan’s energy sector and business groups. Prime Minister Noda’s own cabinet also reportedly failed to ratify the complete withdrawal of nuclear generation from the mix, although sanctioning its reduction.
