Updated to Q1 2016
In the first quarter of 2016, the Asian base oils market saw prices for some grades snapping out of an extended downtrend which started since the third quarter of 2015, as cautious inventory management among regional refiners amid the sliding prices led to tightened spot availability for March shipment lots. This was especially so for Group I and II base oils, as some Asian refiners were due to conduct scheduled turnaround in the second quarter. Weak prices seen earlier for base oils also led some refiners to actively export their cargoes to deep-sea destinations such as the European market.
In Asia, stronger demand after Lunar New Year holiday also saw increased cargo uptake among buyers, who were seeking to restock inventories. The upcoming Songkran festival in April also saw increased cargo uptake from the domestic Thai market, which reduced export availability for March among key Thai refiners. As a result, March cargoes were offered at a premium to prices seen for January and February, leading to firmer negotiations and subsequent fixtures in the market.
