China imported a total of 51.20m tonnes crude in the first two months of 2014, up by 11.47% year on year, and the volume for January hit record high of 28.15m tonnes, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
The notable increase in January was mainly because Chinese refiners stocked up for feedstock before the Lunar New Year holiday. Furthermore, Sinochem’s Quanzhou Petrochemical started a trial run at its 12m tonne/year refinery in January, which also pushed up the crude imports, market sources said.
China’s crude import volume is expected to dip in March and the second quarter because of falling demand in the peak period of turnaround at the refineries in April-June, ICIS C1’s data showed.
