Electricity Overview Transcript
The interesting thing about the European Electricity markets is that electricity can’t be stored so unlike other commodities, you don’t have the ability to put things in storage, and you don’t have those dynamics.
The grid has to balance the power market every minute of every hour of every day.
Another thing that’s making electricity really interesting right now is that it’s a key part of the renewable energy policy of the European Union. The European Union is relying on power to make up most of its renewable energy targets. And so gas-fired generation, coal-fired generation and hydro-generation is coming together with newer forms of renewable forms of generation such as wind and solar and the differences in weather make for very volatile pricing.

There is hope that the carbon emissions back-loading proposal may yet strengthen carbon prices. This provided an uplift to the market in September that helped to boost power prices away from near-record lows in many markets, although these gains have subsequently softened again.
An oversupplied coal market continues to support positive power generation economics for coal-fired plants, while renewables are still seeing strong production assisted by well-stocked hydropower systems and new wind capacity. But margins for gas-fired generators remain low or even loss-making in some European countries.
Trading volumes continue to be affected by the lack of new fundamental drivers and ongoing low demand, with utilities keen to sell power further forward than in previous years to lock in price in a falling market. New regulation is also undermining risk appetite.
