Electricity Overview Transcript
The interesting thing about the European Electricity markets is that electricity can’t be stored so unlike other commodities, you don’t have the ability to put things in storage, and you don’t have those dynamics.
The grid has to balance the power market every minute of every hour of every day.
Another thing that’s making electricity really interesting right now is that it’s a key part of the renewable energy policy of the European Union. The European Union is relying on power to make up most of its renewable energy targets. And so gas-fired generation, coal-fired generation and hydro-generation is coming together with newer forms of renewable forms of generation such as wind and solar and the differences in weather make for very volatile pricing.

Updated to Q4 2014
European wholesale electricity markets traded throughout the final quarter of 2014 against a backdrop of structurally weak demand and ever-growing supply of renewable power, continuing the weak trends from the previous quarter.
Key long-term contracts bumped along at historical lows as the twin fundamental drivers depressed wholesale power markets, triggering in some cases a full-scale review of energy utilities’ business plans going forward, amid a permanently shifted landscape.
The crude oil crash also weighed in, pulling down oil-indexed gas contracts which in turn pressured power markets, although with many long-term products already trading close to the bottom of the market given the fundamental outlook, the crude-driven downside was limited.
The German base load product for delivery during the year ahead – the bellwether European power contract – threatened to push up out of its historical low range in mid-November. However, with no growth in demand to support this, the market quickly reassessed its valuation, selling the product down to a new low by the time of its expiry at the end of the quarter.
