Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Updated to Q1 2016
Spot fuel ethanol prices in Europe plunged during the first quarter of 2016. Prices were initially very strong, brushing the €600/cbm FOB Rotterdam mark, supported by residual tightness from the end of 2015 and fears for the financial fate of Spain’s Abengoa, a major producer. A maintenance period believed to have taken place at Vivergo Fuels’ Hull plant in the UK between December 2015 and January 2016 also supported prices.
However, the attractively strong values brought an onslaught of imports from the US, with a figure of 40,000cbm cited by some sources as heading east across the Atlantic. Volume from Peru is also said to have been offered in Rotterdam.
As fears for the future of Abengoa died down, and it announced its intention to sell its European biofuel plants, so too did worries about a sudden loss of capacity, which cooled market sentiment. A typical uptick in demand linked with the summer driving season had yet to kick in. Values ended the quarter in the mid-€400s/cbm.
