Gasoline-naphtha-crude-MTBE: Market overview
China’s gasoline prices went up in the second half of February amid good demand, but lost the gains in the following two and a half months because of lacklustre demand and losses in international crude benchmarks.
The market gained support from the strengthening crude after the Lunar New Year holiday on 9-15 February. However, rainy weather weighed on the actual gasoline demand entering March.
The Chinese central government announced a new gasoline pricing mechanism on 27 March, by cutting the price adjustment interval from 22 working days to 10.
This means the domestic gasoline prices are more closely linked to the international market.
It thus has negative impact on the speculative demand in the domestic gasoline market.
The government has altogether adjusted the domestic gasoline retail ceiling prices three times in the period.
During the three months to mid-May, supply of national standard gasoline products was ample amid normal runs at the domestic major refineries. Blending gasoline was oversupplied in the period with no buying from Sinopec and PetroChina.
