China’s petroleum market has seen a high import volume and good refining appetite. China posted historically high crude imports of 26.11m tonnes in July, up by 17.77% from June, and up by 19.61% year on year, and imports in the first seven months of 2013 rose by 1.41% year on year to 164m tonnes, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs.
Crude throughput in China rebounded in June and July from a low level in May as a result of fewer turnarounds seen in major refiners. The second peaked turnarounds of this year fell in May, according to ICIS C1 data.
The average operating rate of 35 major refiners stood at the medium-to-high levels of 83-86.5% from mid-May to the end of July. But it fell to 80.76%, the second lowest level so far this year, in early August following another round of peaked maintenance.
Gasoil wholesale prices fluctuated between mid-July and mid-August, following changes in retail ceiling prices. Middlemen bought gasoil according to their needs and maintained low inventories amid continuously weak demand from end-users.
Gasoline wholesale prices in China fluctuated from mid-May to mid-August, in line with the trend of retail prices. The Chinese government hiked the retail ceiling prices by three times while cutting it twice as international crude prices fluctuated upwards.
